Ps 46:1-11
Pr 10:23

Laws and numbers.  We've just finished reading the book of Leviticus.  The book of Laws.  "These are the commands the Lord gave Moses on Mount Sinai for the Israelites."  (Lev 14:34)  I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the many laws that God gave to the Israelites.  Laws about diet and cleanliness.  Laws about religious ceremonies and clothing.  Laws about sickness and even about mold.  The Bible says that God gave these laws to Moses on the mountain and Moses brought them back to the people.  I've wondered how Moses was able to remember each one, in all it's detail, and to be able to repeat them and have them written down.  It was no small task.  Only God could have caused Moses to be able to accomplish this so that not one of the laws was missing.

A God of details.  And now we read about the counting of the men from each tribe who are able to serve in the army.  What a daunting task that had to be!!  God commanded Moses and Aaron to count and to record the names of each man twenty years and over who were able-bodied.  We are told that helpers were assigned but it appears that the responsibility belonged to the two brothers.  I wonder how long it took them to write down the names of more than half a million men?  Did they have a team of people who kept them supplied with writing materials and ink?  A huge job.  A tedious job.  But Numbers 1:19b says, "And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai:".  There is no indication that Moses stamped his foot, whined to God that it was too hard or hesitated in any way.  It was important to God and so he just did it.

The Bible tells us over and over about how our God is a God of order and design.  Nothing is left to chance.  Every bit of the Creation planned and executed in a way that completely boggles my mind.  How it all fits together.  I'm reminded of a story that I saw on a nature program a long time ago about a tiny beetle and it just shouted out to me, "Yup!!!  That's my God!!!"   This tiny beetle (about the size of a lady bug) lived on a certain leaf and it's natural enemy was the ant.  But when it sensed the ant nearby, it would clamp down on the leaf so hard that the ant could not pry it off.  Scientists decided to find out what made the little beetle so strong against it's adversery.  They discovered that on the bottom of each foot of the beetle were thousands of tiny suction cups that secreted a minute amount of a liquid in times of stress.  This allowed the beetle to cling to the leaf and save it from being an ant's dinner.  A God of details???  I think so.

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." (Ps 46:1)  This is definitely a verse to hang on to.  Our God who gave laws to protect His people, who is involved in the counting of men as well as the hairs on our heads, who took the time to intricately design the foot of a beetle.  Yes.  I would say this is my God and He sure loves me.
