Monday, May 13, 2013 [Streams of Living Water]

"On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, 'If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.' By this he meant the Spirit whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified." (John 7:37-39)

These three verses resonated with my spirit. Jesus was calling in a loud voice to only those that were thirsty. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary to be thirsty means to be "deficient in moisture; or to have a strong desire for." Jesus was talking to the people that knew they needed more and that had a strong desire for something else in their lives; that had a strong desire for Jesus.

In addition to having a strong desire, Jesus said there was one more thing they needed to do.  They needed to go to him for a drink and believe that He was who the Scriptures predicted was to come. By going to Jesus Christ, the people would not get a sip or a tall glass of water that would fill them for just a day. By going to Jesus Christ, they would get a constant stream flowing through their body. They would be eternally filled with living water. The water wouldn't be stagnant or stop, but it would continue its flow. Jesus was giving us the Holy Spirit to fill those places that were deficient in moisture. We all have those empty spots in our hearts. God put them there, so that we would have the desire/thirst for something more. It is up to us to choose with what we will fill those holes. We can either fill it with Jesus who will make us whole or with other things that will seep right through the holes.

The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
(Isaiah 58:11)

"Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
(John 4:14)

The Spirit and the bride say "Come!"  Everyone who hears this should also say, "Come!"  If anyone is thirsty, let them come; they can have the water of life as a free gift if they want it.
(Revelation 22:17)
