Exodus 19:16-21:21
Matthew 23:13-39
Psalm 28:1-9
Proverbs 7:1-5

Yesterday, we read about the greatest commandments: Love God and love people. Jesus said the entire law can be summed up in these two commandments.

Today, as we read the Ten Commandments, think about what Jesus said. Look at the Ten Commandments as a guide to show us how we are to love God and love people.

In Matthew 23, Jesus is rebuking the Pharisees for missing the point of the law. They focus so much on following each letter of the law that they have forgotten the purpose for it. If we obey every single command God gives us, but we lose sight of what's important (love, justice, mercy, faith), then we are no better than the Pharisees. The harshest words that Jesus ever spoke were against the Pharisees. I certainly don't want to be like those guys.

When you read the Ten Commandments and the law, don't look at it as a checklist of things we have to do in order to stay on God's good side. Instead, ask yourself: (1) How does this show me how to love God? and (2) How does this show me how to love others?
